The anatomy of a fire door.

The main body of the door is called the door leaf. It must be undamaged and with a suitable fire rating. As well as fitted to ensure correct gap between door and frame when closed.

The structure that holds the assembly in place. It must be a fire tested design, compatible with the door leaf and securely fitted with correct fixings and fire proof material in any gaps.

Hinges fasten the door to the frame in order for it to operate. In fire door sets, there should be at least 3 hinges fitted with the correct fixings, in the correct place as detailed in the fire certificate.

Other fire door hardware such as lock sets, push/pull plates and handles must be appropriately rated for the door fire rating and if it’s a certified door set must be approved in the field of application.

Crucial components to a fire door sets performance are intumescent seals - Which expand under heat creating a sealed barrier around the door leaf.

Suitable for use on the specific fire door, a door closer’s purpose is to ensure the door closes snugly against the frame and is easy to operate.

Air transfer grilles help maintain air circulation in a compartment. They must at a minimum be intumescent when used in a fire door set however sometimes specialist electronic fire and smoke rated grilles are required.

Mandatory Signage such as “Fire Door Keep Shut” needs to be fitted in the correct location and have the correct design.
